Welcome to the WiSAR Lab

The WiSAR Lab is an Applied Research Enhancement (ARE) Centre, funded by Enterprise Ireland in the Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT). The focus of the WiSAR Lab is on Wireless Sensor Networks, particularly Body Area Networks and the application of Wireless Sensor Networks in buildings with an emphasis on evaluating and minimising the power consumption of the devices used. Our goal is to be a centre of excellence in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) and a hub of research and applied solutions for technology companies locally and nationally.

The  Body Area Network (BAN) is a network of implantable and/or body worn wireless devices, generally connected to an external network via a hub, which is either worn or mounted close to the body. There are many potential applications for this technology including medical devices, health monitoring, elderly monitoring, disability assistance, sports, and entertainment. The WiSAR Lab attends the IEEE 802.15.6 Working Group, which is developing a standard for BAN's.

Our research work concentrates on

  • the design and analysis of the MAC and Routing Protocols to be used in a BAN and evaluating the protocols' performance in real BAN testbeds and simulated environments
  • the design of wireless sensor technology for networks for environmental monitoring and control, with a deployed office testbed, using off the shelf 802.15.4 technology and our own hardware and software platforms.

.

The WiSAR Lab works closely with client companies and with the co-located Epicentre. Our Industry collaboration has included feasibility studies, RF testing, software design and  full prototype development, including software, PCB design/build as well as 3D Modelling and Fabrication. The WiSAR Lab received an Enterprise Ireland Capital Equipment grant, which has allowed us to develop a state of the art RF lab to support our research and client companies.
